This is him and this administration demonstrating that they can take control of state national guards which exist to protect from an oppressive federal army and position themselves in cities to suppress the vote. This is nothing more than another power grab to ensure the 2026 election goes their way. Democratic governors in these states should not allow him to take control of their National Guard. Whatever this law is that allows him to take control of a state’s national guard in the event of an “emergency“, should be ripped up. There are SO MANY POSTS of people only focusing on the reduction in crime rate when they bring this up.  And the majority of comments simply reiterate this rhetoric.

Occasionally, there will be a comment referencing the fact that there are literally armed soldiers policing the streets and reminding everyone else that a significant reduction in crime is absolutely expected in this situation.  Who the fuck robs a convenience store with an armed Humvee down the block?

But these comments are quickly overshadowed by the echo chamber 'crime reduction GOOD' garbage.

They seem totally incapable of looking beyond the initial set of information and realizing the ramifications of armed soldiers policing in the streets.

There was legal ability to do so in DC because DC is special and not a state.  The rules are different there.  But in normal states, you can't simply mobilize the National Guard like this.

The National Guard also have no crime crack down functionality.  They're not for that function, not built for it, and kind of have nothing useful to do with it.  They also can't legally do much at all within the states for policing functions.  Legally, they're not allowed to do much at all.

So what's the value?

It also doesn't help that Trump is doing this in areas that already have some of the lowest crime rates in their history BEFORE he brings the National Guard there. But it IS a marketing tool.  It's something right wing media entities can spew for their audience.  "Just LOOK at the record low crime rates in DC thanks to Trump and the National Guard!" I'm already seeing the "Look, he's not just picking on Democratic bastions, he's cracking down on big bad crime everywhere!" comments, and folks, that's missing the point.

This is being done by employing US Code Title 32, Section 502F.  
Look up that code and read it closely, and remember this is the same trick used in 2020 to deploy the National Guard into DC against the George Floyd murder protests.  That's important, as it's not a new trick in the Trump playbook, but it's a little different this time because they're not just targeting the "easy pickings" of Federal control in Washington DC.

Title 32 only allows for Federal use and payment of these troops, but they remain State resources.  Think on that.  Under those restrictions if they tried this in any Democratic city, they would immediately run into pushback over State vs. Federal control of those troops - governors could and would literally say "Well hey, we need these troops for State Things so no, you can't use them right now, sorry", and the thorny court battles would ensue.  The right-wing illusion of unfettered authority they want so badly to promote would be diluted and the impact lessened.  In Republican States however, they know they local bootlickers will just roll over and let the administration use the troops however they want, because there aren't enough vertebrae to build one single solitary spine in the Republican party in 2025.

This is not some both-sides equal-opportunity crackdown on crime from the magnanimous and balanced Federal government.  This is exploitation of Republican weakness to give Trump and his goon squad more convenient cover to continue to get away with trying to normalize literal domestic terror.

We have an incredible food scene here. My friend came to visit from out of town and we took him to Thames street Oyster for dinner Friday night then Gunther and Co. Saturday night.
